To promote road safety, traffic efficiency and expedite autonomous applications, (V2X) allows vehicles to communicate with other vehicles/infrastructure/pedestrians/networks. In the U.S., there is growing momentum around V2X adoption, with Cellular V2X (C-V2X) positioned as a foundational technology to enable this evolution.

Understanding V2X Technology

V2X encompasses various communication modes:

Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V): Permits vehicles to share data on speed, location and heading in order to avert crashes.

V2P (Vehicle-to-Pedestrian): Allows the vehicle to sense and communicate with pedestrians, improving security.

Vehicle-to-Network (V2N): Links vehicles to cellular networks for purposes such as navigation and remote diagnostics.

Such communication is facilitated by techniques such as Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) and Cellular V2X.

The Rise of C-V2X in the U.S.

Existing cellular technologies and future 5G networks support the communication between vehicles with C-V2X. In contrast with DSRC running on dedicated spectrum, C-V2X uses the 5.9 GHz band that is consistent with US Federal Communication Commission (FCC) allocation of 30 MHz in this range for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The move is part of a larger U.S. trend that favors C-V2X as the standard for V2X communications. That it can be used with cellular networks has advantages including greater range, scalability and support for more advanced applications including self-driving vehicles.

Market Growth and Adoption

The US is the North American V2X market with an 86% share in 2024. The market is expected to reach USD 4.98 billion by 2034 from USD 1.29 billion in 2025, at a CAGR of over 18% during the forecast period The growth of connected vehicles and increasing safety and security concerns are the primary reasons for pushing manufacturers towards developing secured ADAS systems.” V2X features are being eagerly adopted by automotive manufacturers. General Motors (GM) has deployed V2X in its models, and other car manufacturers are also doing the same. The U.S. Department of Transportation has also awarded grants intended to help speed deployment of V2X in cities like Houston, Phoenix, and Utah.

Benefits of V2X and C-V2X

V2X and C-V2X technologies provides multiple advantages:

Improved Safety: With V2X technology a vehicle can predict and react to potential dangers, helping avoid accidents and reduce fatalities.

Increased Traffic Efficiency: By communicating in real time, traffic can be more efficiently managed, reducing congestion.

Autonomous driving support: V2X exchanges information so that autonomous vehicles can travel safely and efficiently.

Environmental: Less Emissions and Fuel Oder traffic flow equals better air quality.

Challenges and Future Outlook

V2X is constrained by interoperability issues among different communication standards and infrastructure enhancements.
