Verdict

BMW has officially brought a very different kind of electric luxury car to India. The BMW i5 LWB has been launched at an introductory price of ₹79.6 lakh, giving Indian buyers a long-wheelbase electric sedan with an 81.6kWh battery, 268hp electric motor and a claimed 669km MIDC range. More importantly, this is not a fully imported flagship sitting at the top of BMW’s price ladder. The i5 LWB is being locally assembled at BMW Group Plant Chennai, making it BMW India’s first locally produced electric sedan.

That combination makes the BMW i5 LWB more interesting than its headline price suggests. At a time when India’s luxury market is increasingly dominated by SUVs and the electric-car conversation is moving towards high-performance crossovers, BMW has chosen to put a spacious executive sedan back in the spotlight. The i5 LWB is effectively BMW’s electric answer for buyers who still want the traditional luxury-sedan experience, but no longer want an internal-combustion powertrain.

BMW i5 LWB Price in India and Launch Details

The BMW i5 LWB price in India starts at ₹79.6 lakh ex-showroom for the eDrive35L M Sport variant. BMW is also offering a limited First Edition at the same introductory price, although that version is restricted to 99 units and BMW says all 99 had already been sold before the official launch. The company has opened bookings through its authorised dealer network and deliveries are beginning immediately.

The pricing is particularly significant because local assembly changes the positioning of the car within BMW’s Indian portfolio. Instead of arriving as a completely built import, the i5 LWB is produced at BMW’s Chennai facility, where the company already manufactures several models for the Indian market. BMW itself describes the i5 LWB as its first locally produced electric sedan in India and the second locally produced BMW EV after the iX1 LWB.

For a luxury EV, that localization is more than a manufacturing footnote. It gives BMW an opportunity to offer a large, premium electric sedan without positioning it exclusively as an ultra-expensive imported product, while also allowing the brand to expand its electric portfolio deeper into the executive-car segment.

Read More: Tata Curvv Series X Launched at ₹9.99 Lakh

BMW i5 LWB Range, Battery and Performance

At the heart of the BMW i5 LWB is an 81.6kWh high-voltage battery paired with a single electric motor producing 268hp and 410Nm of torque. BMW claims a 0-100kph acceleration time of 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 195kph, figures that make it clear that this is still a BMW first and a luxury chauffeur-focused sedan second.

The headline number, however, is the BMW i5 LWB range, which stands at up to 669km according to the MIDC test cycle. BMW’s Indian website also lists the 669km figure while noting that actual range can vary depending on driving style, route conditions, temperature and the use of climate control. That distinction matters because laboratory-certified range and everyday driving range are never identical, particularly with a large luxury sedan.

Still, a claimed 669km is a strong number on paper. It gives the i5 LWB the kind of headline range that can make long-distance electric travel feel considerably less intimidating, particularly for buyers who have access to home or workplace charging. The 81.6kWh battery is also substantial enough to give the car the energy reserve expected from a large executive EV.

Charging the BMW i5 LWB

The BMW i5 LWB supports DC fast charging at up to 160kW.

The BMW i5 LWB supports DC fast charging at up to 160kW, with BMW claiming a 10-80 percent charging time of around 33 minutes. The company is also offering an 11kW BMW Wallbox charger, including installation, as part of the ownership package.

That charging capability matters because luxury EV ownership is increasingly about the complete ecosystem rather than simply battery size. A large battery provides confidence on longer journeys, but charging speed determines how easily the car can recover useful range when the owner does need to stop.

For Indian buyers, home charging will likely remain the most convenient way to use the car day to day, while the DC fast-charging capability becomes more important for highway travel. The i5 LWB therefore approaches EV ownership in much the same way premium buyers approach other aspects of the car: convenience and refinement are supposed to be built into the experience.

A Long-Wheelbase BMW Built Around Rear-Seat Comfort

The BMW i5 LWB offers a spacious rear cabin designed around executive comfort.

The defining feature of the BMW i5 LWB is not actually its battery. It is the extra space created by its long-wheelbase architecture.

The sedan measures 5,175mm in length, 2,156mm in width and 1,520mm in height, while the wheelbase stretches to 3,105mm. BMW positions it as one of the largest and most spacious cars in its segment, with the extended wheelbase specifically designed to improve the rear-seat experience.

That makes the i5 LWB an interesting proposition in India because the traditional executive sedan still has a strong place among luxury-car buyers who spend considerable time being driven rather than driving themselves. The long rear doors and additional wheelbase create the sort of space that is difficult to replicate simply by making a conventional sedan taller.

BMW has also adapted the suspension and ride height for Indian conditions. The i5 LWB gets adaptive rear-axle air suspension as standard, while the company says ground clearance has been enhanced for Indian roads. That is an important detail for a large luxury sedan expected to deal with speed breakers, uneven surfaces and less-than-perfect urban roads.

BMW i5 LWB Interior and Features

The BMW i5 LWB features a technology-focused cockpit with BMW’s Curved Display.

Inside, the BMW i5 LWB follows the technology-heavy approach already associated with BMW’s latest-generation interiors. The cabin uses BMW’s Curved Display, combining a 12.3-inch information display with a 14.9-inch control display, while BMW Operating System 8.5 provides the main digital interface. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, Remote Software Upgrades and MyBMW App functionality are among the technology features available.

The luxury focus becomes even clearer in the rear cabin. Comfort-oriented rear seating, four-zone climate control, a panoramic glass roof and a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system are part of the package. The First Edition goes further with a rear-seat entertainment package, a tablet and tablet holder, special interior trim and exclusive exterior detailing.

There is also a strong driver-assistance package. Depending on specification, the car includes features such as Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Parking Assistant Professional, Remote Parking, Manoeuvring Assistant, Reverse Assistant, Lane Change Warning, Cross Traffic Warning and Front and Rear Collision Warning. The safety package is backed by eight airbags and other electronic stability and collision-protection systems.

BMW i5 LWB Dimensions and Indian Road Adaptation

The BMW i5 LWB’s extended proportions highlight its 3,105mm wheelbase and executive-sedan design.

Large dimensions are a major part of the BMW i5 LWB identity. Its 3,105mm wheelbase is particularly important because this car is designed around executive-car priorities rather than simply trying to become another sporty EV.

The adaptive rear-axle air suspension is therefore one of the most significant mechanical features. It gives BMW additional control over ride comfort and body movement while also helping the sedan cope with India’s varied road surfaces. BMW has specifically highlighted the Indian-road adaptation, including increased ground clearance, rather than treating the car as a global specification simply dropped into the Indian market.

That should matter to buyers more than another flashy technology feature. An electric luxury sedan can have enormous power and a huge battery, but if it constantly worries its owner on badly designed speed breakers, the premium experience quickly loses its shine.

BMW i5 LWB vs the Traditional Luxury Sedan

The most interesting thing about the BMW i5 LWB is that it does not try to hide the fact that it is a sedan.

That sounds obvious, but it matters in today’s market. Luxury buyers have increasingly moved towards SUVs because they offer commanding driving positions, easier ingress and egress, road presence and practicality. BMW’s decision to bring the i5 LWB to India is effectively a bet that there remains a meaningful audience for the executive sedan — especially when electrification removes many of the traditional compromises associated with large petrol or diesel engines.

An electric motor also changes the character of the car. The i5 LWB does not need a large-displacement engine to deliver effortless acceleration, and the near-silent operation of an EV naturally complements the rear-seat comfort that BMW is emphasising.

The result is a car that makes more sense as a refined executive machine than as an electric performance weapon. Its 268hp output is respectable, but BMW has deliberately left the extreme-performance role to other members of the i5 family.

BMW i5 LWB First Edition: What Makes It Special?

BMW is introducing the BMW i5 LWB First Edition as a limited-run model restricted to 99 customers. The First Edition carries the same ₹79.6 lakh introductory price, but adds a more exclusive cabin and rear-seat specification. BMW says all 99 units were sold before the official launch, which means the limited edition has already done its job as an early halo for the model.

The First Edition receives a rear-seat entertainment package with a tablet and tablet holder, BMW Individual Silver Bronze accents, Fineline open-pored fine-wood trim and a distinctive “FIRST EDITION” laser engraving. The exterior uses Carbon Black Metallic paint with Titanium Bronze accents.

For most buyers, however, the regular eDrive35L M Sport will be the more important car because it represents BMW’s actual long-term proposition in India’s premium electric-sedan market.

What Makes the BMW i5 LWB Different in India?

The BMW i5 LWB arrives at an interesting point in India’s EV transition. The first phase of the premium EV market was dominated by imported models and technology showcases, while the next phase is becoming increasingly focused on localisation, pricing and everyday usability.

BMW’s approach is therefore significant. Local assembly, a large battery, long claimed range and a long-wheelbase cabin combine several of the things Indian luxury buyers traditionally value into a single electric product.

It also shows that BMW is not abandoning the executive sedan simply because SUVs are fashionable. Instead, the company is giving the sedan a new reason to exist. Electric propulsion provides the refinement, long-wheelbase packaging provides the space and local production helps make the proposition more commercially realistic.

Ride And Tech Insight: BMW Is Betting on the Luxury Sedan Again

The biggest story here is not the 669km number or even the ₹79.6 lakh price. It is BMW’s decision to bring a locally assembled long-wheelbase electric sedan to India at all.

The Indian luxury market has changed dramatically, and SUVs now dominate much of the premium conversation. Yet the executive sedan still has one advantage that SUVs cannot completely reproduce: a low, quiet and comfortable cabin designed around effortless long-distance travel. The i5 LWB takes that traditional formula and replaces the combustion engine with an electric powertrain.

That makes the BMW i5 LWB a useful test of where India’s premium EV market is heading. If buyers respond strongly to a large electric sedan that prioritises rear-seat comfort rather than headline performance, other manufacturers may have more reason to continue investing in this body style. If the market continues moving overwhelmingly towards premium electric SUVs, the i5 LWB could instead become an interesting example of BMW preserving a traditional luxury formula during a major industry transition.

There is another important point: BMW has not tried to make the i5 LWB unnecessarily exotic. Local production, a single mainstream powertrain and a strong emphasis on comfort suggest that the company wants this to be a serious volume product within its premium EV portfolio rather than simply a technological showcase.

That is arguably the more important development for Indian buyers.

Read More: Maruti Baleno Facelift Launched at ₹6.10 Lakh

BMW i5 LWB Safety and Ownership Coverage

The BMW i5 LWB comes with a comprehensive set of active and passive safety systems, including eight airbags, Dynamic Stability Control, electric parking brake with auto hold, side-impact protection, electronic vehicle immobilisation with crash sensor and child-seat mounting. Driver-assistance systems add another layer of protection and convenience.

BMW is also offering a two-year unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, while the high-voltage battery receives coverage for eight years or 160,000km. For an EV buyer, the battery warranty is particularly important because the battery remains one of the most expensive components in the vehicle.

For buyers considering the car as a long-term luxury vehicle, the warranty and charging package therefore deserve as much attention as the headline range figure.

BMW i5 LWB Specifications at a Glance

Specification

BMW i5 LWB

Powertrain

Electric

Variant

eDrive35L M Sport

Battery

81.6kWh

Maximum power

268hp

Maximum torque

410Nm

Claimed range

Up to 669km MIDC

0-100kph

6.7 seconds

Top speed

195kph

DC charging

Up to 160kW

10-80% charging

Claimed 33 minutes

Length

5,175mm

Width

2,156mm

Height

1,520mm

Wheelbase

3,105mm

Production

BMW Group Plant Chennai

India price

₹79.6 lakh ex-showroom

The specifications above are based on BMW’s India information and fresh launch reporting; the 669km figure is an MIDC test-cycle claim and should not be interpreted as guaranteed real-world range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BMW i5 LWB price in India?

The BMW i5 LWB has been launched in India at an introductory ex-showroom price of ₹79.6 lakh for the eDrive35L M Sport. At ₹79.6 lakh, an 81.6kWh battery, claimed 669km MIDC range, 268hp and local assembly give BMW a strong technical foundation, but the real appeal is the way those numbers come together around comfort and refinement.

For buyers who want the high seating position and visual bulk of an SUV, the i5 LWB may not change their minds. But for someone who still believes a proper luxury sedan delivers a more sophisticated way to travel, this BMW makes a compelling argument that electrification does not have to mean abandoning the executive-car formula.

The BMW i5 LWB is therefore more than another premium EV launch. It is BMW testing whether India’s luxury sedan audience is ready to go electric without giving up the space, comfort and road-going character that made these cars desirable in the first place.

Ride And Tech — Where Ride Meets Tech.
Drive Smarter.
